US military helicopter crashes in Texas, killing 3

A helicopter patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border crashed on Friday, killing two National Guard soldiers and a U.S. Border Patrol agent, the U.S. military said.

The U.S. Joint Task Force North said in a statement that the UH-72 Lakota helicopter performing a federal southwest border support mission crashed while performing an aviation mission near Rio Grande City, Texas, at 2:50 p.m. .

Another soldier was injured, a Joint Task Force North statement said. The names of the victims will not be released until next of kin are notified, the statement said. Cause of the accident is being investigated.

The Associated Press reported that a woman and three men were on board, citing a county official. Reports said the injured were in critical condition.

Joint Task Force North, headquartered at Fort Bliss, Texas, is an operational element of the Department of Defense responsible for supporting Customs and Border Protection along with National Guard units.
