US launches missile strikes against Houthi rebels after latest Red Sea attack

The U.S. military carried out an airstrike on Monday against an underwater drone and 18 anti-ship missiles, the latest response to a campaign by Yemen’s Houthi armed group to threaten Red Sea shipping lanes.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported six attacks hours after Iran-backed Houthi rebels fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles at the Liberian-flagged, Singapore-owned container ship Pinocchio.

Central Command said the missile did not hit the ship and no casualties were reported.

Britain’s Maritime Trade Operations said the ship was about 130 kilometers southwest of Salif, Yemen, when the attack occurred.

Houthi spokesman Yahya Saraya claimed responsibility for the attack, which the Houthis said was carried out in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza during the war between Israel and Hamas.

Saraya said on Monday that the Houthis’ operations would escalate during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
