A Pennsylvania judge has charged a Pennsylvania judge with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault for allegedly shooting his ex-boyfriend in the head while he slept. new york post the report said. The incident occurred at a Harrisburg home on Feb. 9 when the victim, Michael McCoy, tried to end a fight with District Judge Sonya McKnight, according to a case affidavit. One year relationship.
Police wrote that McCoy, 54, tried “multiple times” to get McKnight to move out after his one-year relationship ended. On February 9, he returned home from a restaurant and told her he planned to ask McKnight’s mother to help her leave the home.
“Michael McCoy said it seemed like she finally understood it was over,” police said. He went to bed around 11 p.m. but was awakened by a “severe headache,” which left him screaming and panicking. His shouts alerted McKnight in the room, who asked him: “Mike, what have you done to yourself?”
She then called 911 to report McCoy’s injuries. Police said that during the call, she “could not explain what happened and stated that she was sleeping and heard him scream.”
Doctors at the hospital said he suffered a gunshot wound to his right temple, outside his left temple, police said. He is blind in one eye as a result of the shooting.
McCoy also told police at the scene and later at the hospital that he did not shoot himself. Police later said physical evidence showed the victim was shot about a foot away and that McKnight tested positive for gun residue on his hand within an hour of the shooting. She was arrested on February 15 and charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault.
Her position as an elected judge in Dauphin County has been suspended since 2016. McKnight was previously suspended without pay by the Judicial Disciplinary Court, which handles misconduct allegations against judges.
As of Friday, she was being held in the Dauphin County Jail with bail set at $300,000.
