US issues ultimatum to Israel: Gaza ceasefire “immediately”, hostage agreement “without delay”

US President Joe Biden has issued a virtual ultimatum to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, demanding an “immediate” ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and an “immediate” hostage deal, his first move since the war Washington’s strongest response to its allies since the outbreak came on October 7 last year.

Israel has faced international criticism after airstrikes in Gaza killed seven food aid workers, including a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen.

The United States has expressed concern about Israel’s deadly offensive in Gaza, which has killed more than 33,000 people, and has urged an immediate ceasefire in exchange for the release of about 100 hostages by Hamas.

  • Netanyahu has vowed to launch an offensive against Hamas’s last stronghold of Rafah, despite U.S. objections. The move could endanger the lives of more than half of Gaza’s population who have settled in southern Gaza towns after fleeing other parts of the strip during the war.
