The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it has closed a long-running investigation into the loss of nearly 160,000 rear camera images from Tesla’s Model X and Model S vehicles.

The auto safety regulator said Tesla’s 2021 recall of about 135,000 vehicles addresses the risk presented by media control unit failures and will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the recall.

The agency said the touchscreen failure caused significant safety issues, including rearview or backup camera images, external turn-signal lighting, and windshield defogging and defrosting systems that “could reduce driver visibility in inclement weather.”

NHTSA said Friday that the failure also affects Autopilot Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and turn signal functionality due to potential loss of audible chimes, driver sensing and warnings.

The agency last week opened a separate investigation into Tesla’s December recall of 2 million vehicles to boost Autopilot safety.

NHTSA first began investigating complaints in June 2020 that the touchscreen display was not working due to media control unit (MCU) failure.

NHTSA initially sought to recall 158,000 vehicles, but some vehicles with upgraded processors built after March 2018 were not included in the recall.

NHTSA said Friday that the MCU has a limited lifespan and “believes that a 5- or 6-year lifespan is insufficient for an integral component to provide safety functions to the driver.”

Tesla said all units will inevitably fail given the limited storage capacity of the memory device, the agency said. Tesla said in February that about 104,000 of its 135,000 vehicles had been repaired.

The company last month recalled 3,878 Cybertrucks to fix an accelerator pedal pad that could come loose and get stuck in the interior trim.
