Lucknow, Oct 12 (IANS) In the backdrop of the gang rape of a minor in Lucknow, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday criticized the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government for anarchy, corruption, oppression, injustice and all-round failure.
“The law and order situation in the state has come to naught,” he said, reacting to the incident of alleged gang rape of a girl in Lucknow and mocking the BJP government’s claims of showing ‘zero tolerance’ towards crime.
He also criticized alleged encounters involving criminals. “If encounters were the antidote to improving law and order, thousands of such actions would have yielded results.”
“The police, which is responsible for controlling crime, is being used by the government to further political agenda and file false cases against rival politicians,” he alleged.
“When BJP uses police for political matters, law and order is bound to deteriorate. This is why women are unsafe on a large scale,” she said.
Referring to a recent incident of gang rape in Lucknow, Yadav said National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data shows that Uttar Pradesh has seen the highest number of crimes against Dalits, especially the PDA community, under the BJP government.
The PDA refers to pichde (backward classes), Dalits and alpsankhyak (minorities).
Yadav said, “BJP wants to hide its failures. The Chief Minister lies while sitting on the white table. While he meets the people holding such positions. The truth is that the maximum incidents of oppression, injustice and such serious crimes are happening continuously in Uttar Pradesh. These are not just incidents, the limits of corruption have crossed.”
The department which is supposed to serve the people is suffering from corruption, he said, citing the example of an accountant in Kanpur who was found to have illegal assets worth about Rs 100 crore.
Taking aim at the alleged overall failure of the administration, Yadav said, “Neither the health department nor the education department has failed to serve the people.”
He criticized the administration for preventing his party workers from garlanding the statue of Jai Prakash Narayan on his birth anniversary on Saturday.
Alleging a widening gap between the poor and the rich, he said, “JP called for revolution because unemployment and corruption were at their peak.”
Yadav also paid tribute to Ram Manohar Lohia on his death anniversary on Sunday.
