Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Enforcement Directorate has extended his detention by another four days in the alleged liquor policy scam. Mr Kejriwal will now be detained by the investigating agency till April 1. The agency, which investigates financial crimes, requested seven days of detention.

The agency claimed to have evidence of the use of slush funds by AAP in the Goa elections. Addressing the court directly, the First Minister accused the Education Department of trying to “crack down” on his party. He also noted that “no court has proven my guilt” and slammed what he said were flimsy reasons for arresting the sitting chief minister.

Arvind Kejriwal’s government has been accused of corruption after it implemented a policy to liberalize liquor sales in 2021 and gave away lucrative government stakes in the industry. The policy was revoked the following year, but subsequent investigations into alleged corruption in the allocation of licenses led to the imprisonment of two senior allies of Kejriwal.

In its fresh remand plea, the Enforcement Directorate said that during Arvind Kejriwal’s custodial interrogation, his statement was recorded for five days and he “gave evasive replies”. The statements of three other persons were also said to have been recorded while on remand.
