Gorakhpur, Oct 12 (IANS) The impact and reach of the central government’s Swadeshi campaign is being felt on the ground and is also visible in people’s priorities as they head out to buy products ahead of Diwali.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for ‘Self-reliant India’ and ‘Vocal for Local’ has brought new light in the lives of the potter community.

The demand for earthen lamps, utensils and idols of Lakshmi, Ganesh and Kuber is increasing in Kumhar Gali (Potter Lane) of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

Local businessmen are witnessing increasing demand from consumers, who are preferring indigenous and country-made goods over others.

Gorakhpur’s Kumhar Gali is now shining with light and hope, reflecting the spirit of self-reliant India.

Where once Chinese goods were dominant in the markets, now people are giving preference to indigenous earthen lamps and utensils. Foreign decorative items have almost disappeared from the local markets.

Seema Prajapati, a businesswoman from the potter community, told IANS: “Now people are avoiding Chinese goods. Earthen lamps and idols are selling well. This has boosted our business and strengthened our financial position.”

Soninath Prajapati, who has been involved in the profession for almost 30 years, says, “There was a time when we had to stop work, but now we have got new enthusiasm. The government is providing facilities for the potter community. The demand for clay lamps this Diwali is so high that we are unable to meet it.”

Gudiya Prajapati also expressed similar views, saying, “There was a time when the family used to discuss the lack of work and the need to close this business and start something else. After getting government support, the work has become easier.”

He said, “Initially we thought that we should stop this business, but now the demand has increased so much that the potters’ wheels are turning day and night.”
