New Delhi, October 18 (IANS) Notorious gangster Nafees alias Muda, who had a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, was killed by the police in a late night encounter in the forests near Bhavisa village of Kandhla police station area in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh.
Shamli Superintendent of Police (SP) NP Singh said that amid the ongoing campaign against criminals, all outpost in-charges and police station in-charges have intensified night checking.
A senior police officer said that the police saw two suspects on a motorcycle near Bhavisa post on Friday night.
According to Shamli Police SP, when the police tried to stop the criminals, the criminals opened fire, resulting in a fierce shootout.
Nafees got injured by bullet in retaliatory firing. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
More than three dozen criminal cases were registered against Nafees, a resident of Mohalla Khel of Kandhla town, in Shamli district alone.
His crime history includes several cases related to murder, robbery, armed robbery, extortion and fake currency racket.
He was on the run from police action for a long time and was continuing his criminal activities in western Uttar Pradesh.
The SP also said that it has been determined that the vehicle number was also fake.
Police recovered a country-made pistol and a motorcycle which was used by the gangster from the encounter site.
While Nafees was killed, his companion managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness. Several police teams have been deployed to search for the absconding criminals.
The police have intensified the search operation in the surrounding areas to arrest the remaining members of his gang.
Notably, in the last few weeks, the state police has tightened its grip on gangsters and many have been encountered, reflecting CM Yogi’s vision of a ‘gangster-free’ UP.
