A transatlantic flight is taking off London Was shortened after “burning” dirt“Seen on board, causing a emergency landing In edinburgh,
United Airlines flight ua949 departed Heathrow Airport Just after 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, for a 10-hour flight to San Francisco.
After the Boeing 777 took off from London, it flew north over Britain towards Iceland. About an hour and a half into the flight, the aircraft made a U-turn back towards Scotland after issuing the emergency “Squawk 7700” code.
Squawk 7700 is a universal transponder code that alerts air traffic control when an aircraft requires immediate assistance for a general emergency, allowing the airport to clear the runway and prepare emergency services when the flight arrives.
The United flight had to land unexpectedly at Edinburgh Airport at around 4.30pm after the crew detected a burning smell in the cabin.
The 162 passengers and 12 crew members landed safely in the Scottish capital and were provided accommodation while United ordered another flight.
The airline said in a statement Herald“United Flight 949 landed safely in Edinburgh to clear the burning smell. We provided customers with hotel accommodations and rebooked them on other flights to their destinations.”
It is unclear what caused the foul smell. Data from Flightradar shows the plane departed Edinburgh for San Francisco on Saturday, December 6, then flew to Sydney and back over the weekend.
The airline also has scheduled return flights from San Francisco to Tokyo and Brisbane in the coming days.
Independent have contacted United Airlines For further comment.
It is not uncommon for flights to make emergency landings due to strange smells. In mid-November, an American domestic flight was diverted to Houston after reports of smoke in the cabin and flight deck.
American Airlines Flight 2118 departed from Orlando, Florida, for Phoenix, Arizona on November 23, but made an unexpected landing in the Texan city after smoke was detected.
Four flight attendants and a passenger were taken to hospital as a precaution, the airline said, adding that first responders met the plane at the gate.
