New Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS) As we complete a decade since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, COP30 should send a strong political message that multilateralism remains the cornerstone of global climate action, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav said on Monday.
He was leading India’s intervention at the pre-COP30 Ministerial Roundtable in Brazil, an official said in a statement.
The Minister congratulated the COP30 Presidency for creating an inclusive space for open and forward-looking dialogue, as the world moves towards Belém, where the 30th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will be held from 10 to 21 November.
In his address, Yadav emphasized the fact that it is important to translate global policy commitments into practical, locally based solutions to ensure concrete results in Belém.
“The focus must be on translating climate commitments into real-world actions that accelerate implementation and directly improve people’s lives,” he said.
“COP30 must be the COP of adaptation”, the minister said, stressing that all countries must agree on a minimum package of indicators from the UAE-Belém Work Programme.
“We must send an inspiring message to the world with the Baku Adaptation Road Map that we are on the path to ensuring the safety and well-being of billions of people, leaving no one behind,” he said.
Yadav highlighted that, above all, there is a need to strengthen and accelerate the flow of public finance towards adaptation, which perhaps could also boost the flow of finance from other sources.
With the mechanisms of the Paris Agreement fully operational, now is not the time to weaken its architecture by emphasizing the post-GST (Global Stock Take) processes that the new mechanisms seek to set out. He said, let us first be aware of GST and try our best according to our national circumstances.
Reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s affirmation, the minister pointed out that India wants to be part of the solution, not the problem.
India’s initiatives ranging from the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure to the International Big Cat Alliance epitomize the spirit of cooperative and action-oriented multilateralism, the minister said.
“COP30 in Belém reaffirms faith in multilateralism, equity and collective resolve to take real, measurable action for people and planet,” Yadav said.
