Platinum Gaming – which operates unibet.co.uk and uk.bingo.com – has been fined £10 million for anti-money laundering (AML) and social responsibility failings. Gambling Commission Said.
Social responsibility failures include allowing a player to lose £5,000 within 24 hours of registering and more than £16,000 in less than three months.
The company also failed to negotiate with a customer who lost more than £31,000 within nine months and reached his monthly loss limit on six occasions, and another who exceeded his £2,500 loss limit within 16 minutes of registering his account, as potentially being at risk of losing money.
The Gambling Commission said the company would also have to undergo a third-party audit to ensure it effectively implemented its AML and safe gambling procedures.
This is the second round of enforcement action for Platinum Gaming, after being fined £2.9 million again in 2023 for social responsibility and AMP failings.
John Pierce, Gambling Commission enforcement director, said: “While there has been widespread progress in reducing uncontrolled high spending in the industry, the failures at Platinum Gaming are particularly disappointing.
“The case revealed serious shortcomings in customer contact systems, including a failure to identify and act on obvious markers of loss.
“These include consumers losing thousands within hours or days of registration, repeatedly violating loss limits, and exhibiting patterns of binge and high-velocity gambling without appropriate intervention.”
He added: “Senior leaders must take ownership of compliance outcomes and ensure that lessons learned across the organization are supported by structured reporting and board-level monitoring – and further regulatory activity remains a possibility.”
