SwitzerlandLong-celebrated yodeling has received a response from the United Nations cultural agency: The Alpine tradition of chant and song is indeed worthy of classification on the list of world cultural heritage.
a committee based in paris UNESCOmeeting in New DelhiThe United Kingdom on Thursday added yodeling to its list of intangible cultural heritage.
Yodeling was chosen among 67 traditions honored by UNESCO in the Indian capital, which include Italian cooking, Ghanaian highlife music, the fermented Kyrgyz drink Maxim and the El Joropo music and dance tradition. Venezuela,
This list is separate from UNESCO’s World Heritage List, which ensures protection for physical sites considered important to humanity, such as the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
UNESCO said, “Yodeling can be performed by individuals, small groups or singers, and is sometimes accompanied by instruments such as the accordion.”
The assessment states, “It has rich harmonics and is often performed at concerts, parties and competitions, with participants usually wearing traditional regional costumes.”
The government of Switzerland put forward the candidature with UNESCO, and promoters say it is much more than the mountain cry of yesteryear by falsetto-belling male shepherds in suspenders on green hills: it is also a popular form of singing.
The government says at least 12,000 yodelers participate through about 780 groups of the Swiss Yodeling Association.
