Russia launches massive drone and missile attacks on Kyiv

A major Russian attack on central Kiev early today caused a fire in a high-rise apartment building and targeted energy sites, knocking out power in parts of the capital, officials said.

“From the explosions that just occurred – a ballistic missile attack is underway. Missiles one after another, air defense is active,” Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kiev city military administration, said in an update at 2:41 a.m. local time.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said nine people were injured, five of whom were taken to hospital. He said power cuts and disruption of water supply had affected districts located on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River, which runs through the city.

Pictures posted online showed the apartment on fire and firefighters rushed to the scene. Fragments of the dropped drone also fell on many parts of the city.

Energy Minister Svitlana Grinchuk said the Russian military had attacked energy sites. “Energy experts are taking all necessary measures to minimize negative consequences,” Grinchuk said on Facebook.

“As soon as security conditions allow, energy experts will begin to clarify the consequences of the attack and conduct restoration work.”

Zelensky says Putin is personally afraid of ceasefire

Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Vladimir Putin is “personally horrified” by a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine.

“The head of Russia is personally afraid of an armistice, because once the armistice is in place, it will be difficult for him to return to war. Moving from a full-scale war to an armistice and then later resuming a full-scale war – it is not easy for him,” Zelensky said on X Today.

He said, “It is not easy economically, it is not easy with society, and it is not easy with the world. And certainly not easy with the countries that are still shaking hands with Putin today. That is why, for the moment, they have chosen war.”

Zelensky said Ukraine’s long-range strikes, tighter sanctions, holding on to the battlefield, defending itself in the conflict at this time, but “undoubtedly, supporting peaceful initiatives, because it’s the right thing to do – it will work”.

Zelensky says Trump deserves Nobel Peace Prize if ceasefire happens

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kiev will nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he sends Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine and helps negotiate a ceasefire with Russia.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday about his most recent meeting with Trump at the UN General Assembly last month, Zelensky said: “I didn’t hear ‘no’. What I heard was that work will continue at the technical level and this possibility will be considered.”

He added: “The plan to end the war will not be easy, but it is certainly the way forward. And if Trump offers the world – above all, the Ukrainian people – a chance for such a ceasefire, then yes, he should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

“We will nominate him on behalf of Ukraine.”
