Power outages in Ukraine and Moldova due to grid failure

Parts of Ukraine and Moldova, including the capitals of the two neighboring countries, were plunged into blackouts on Saturday due to faulty high-voltage power lines, officials said.

Although Ukraine’s power grid has been hit by the cumulative impact of Russian airstrikes that have severely limited power supplies in recent weeks, officials have not directly linked the incident to war damage.

Ukraine’s Digital Ministry also stated that a cyberattack was not to blame.

The system is under even more pressure as the cold snap returns this weekend.

At least five Ukrainian regions and parts of Moldova, as well as the capitals Kiev and Chisinau, were affected by the outage after the outage occurred at 10:42 a.m. Kiev time.

‘Millions of people supported by USAID in Ukraine in trouble,’ official says

U.S. and European officials are concerned that millions of dollars in energy aid for Ukraine have yet to be released as Russia steps up attacks on energy infrastructure.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) had expected to release the funds before Donald Trump effectively shut down the agency last year, multiple sources, including a U.S. official and a Ukrainian official, told Reuters.

Some funds are stuck in what sources describe as bureaucratic boondoggles. It’s unclear how many are on hold. The previous Biden administration pledged significant funding for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, including $824 million by mid-2024.
