Britain sent more than 85,000 drones to Kiev in six months
Amid a surge in Russian attack drone attacks, the Defense Secretary announced that the UK has delivered more than 85,000 military drones to Ukraine in the past six months.
John Healey will say that £600 million has been invested in drones for Kiev’s armed forces.
Drones – including thousands of short-range first-person-view models – are being used for reconnaissance, precision strikes and to disrupt Russian operations behind the front lines.
He will tell the Ukraine Defense Liaison Group in Brussels tomorrow that Western countries need to “increase drone production to counter (Vladimir) Putin’s advances”.
Western officials said that in September, Russia launched about 5,500 unilateral strike drones into Ukraine — a significant increase from 4,100 in August.
More than 2,400 have been launched so far in October, with most focused on Ukrainian gas storage and production facilities.

Ukraine orders mass evacuation around devastated Kupyansk
Local authorities in Ukraine ordered the evacuation of families from dozens of villages near the completely destroyed northeastern city of Kupyansk, citing the “deteriorating security situation”, as the region has faced heavy Russian attacks.
Oleh Sinihubov, the governor of the northeastern Kharkiv region, wrote on Telegram that a total of 409 families with 601 children were asked to leave 27 areas.
Another official in the affected area later told public broadcaster Suspilne that the list of areas to be evacuated by families had been expanded to 40.
For months, Russian forces have been attacking and advancing on the city of Kupyansk, seen as their key target on their push westward through central and eastern Ukraine in the more than three-and-a-half-year-old war.
The city was captured by Russian forces in the early weeks of the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but recaptured by Kiev forces later that year.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last week that Ukrainian forces were guarding key border areas, including Kupyansk. He also spoke of a Ukrainian counter-offensive in recent days near the city of Dobropylia in the south.

Chinese airlines protest Trump’s plan to stop flying over Russia on US routes
Major Chinese airlines have urged the Trump administration to abandon plans to bar them from flying over Russia on U.S. flights, saying it would increase flight times, increase airfares and disrupt some routes.
China Eastern, one of six Chinese airlines that sent the letter, said in a filing to USDOT that the move could increase flight times on some of its most important routes by two to three hours, significantly increase the risk of missed connections and increase fuel consumption.
Air China and China Southern said the decision would adversely affect a large number of travelers in the United States and China.
China Southern estimated that at least 2,800 passengers traveling during the peak holiday season of November 1 to December 31 would need to rebook, “putting their travel plans at risk.”
Separately, United Airlines urged the Trump administration to extend restrictions on Cathay Pacific, which flies over Russia on flights to the United States from Hong Kong, and other Hong Kong-based carriers.
Last week the US Transportation Department proposed banning Chinese airlines from flying over Russia on routes to and from the United States, saying the reduced flight time would hurt US carriers.

Trump again said that he is disappointed with Putin
US President Donald Trump again criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin during a call with reporters at the White House yesterday, saying the Russian leader is not ready to end his war in Ukraine.
“Look, I’m very disappointed because Vladimir and I had a very good relationship, probably still have,” Trump said.
“He’s really got to settle this war. And you know there are long lines for gasoline in Russia right now… and suddenly its economy is going to collapse.”

Poland warns of Russia’s attack deep into Europe
Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has warned that Europe must prepare for Russia to strike deeper into the region.
The Polish leader was unveiling the Iranian Shahid-136 drone shot down over Ukraine as he warned it would be “irresponsible” not to build a “drone wall”-like defense on the eastern side of Europe.
Standing next to Iranian drones in the House of the Speaker of the British Parliament, he said about countering future incursions, “We must be prepared to counter this, and so I think it would be irresponsible not to build anti-drone and drone capability these days.”
“Unfortunately, Russia can reach deep into Europe,” he said.
Sikorsky, a longtime staunch critic of Putin, urged Europe to plan to support Ukraine for three more years, a deadline, he said, that Kiev was also planning for.
“The Ukrainians have been planning this war for three years, which is prudent,” he said. “And we need to convince Putin that we are prepared to stay on this course for at least those three years.”
