Ukraine uses Starlink for military communications in war with Russia

The Russian military is illegally acquiring Starlink satellite terminals from third countries and increasing their use on the front lines, a spokesman for Ukraine’s military spy agency told Reuters on Monday, without explaining how he knew.
Military official Andriy Yusov said work was underway to prevent Russian forces from using high-speed satellite internet terminals produced by Elon Musk’s SpaceX to coordinate attacks on occupied areas of Ukraine .
Asked how the Russian military obtained the equipment, Yusov said: “Contraband from a third country.”
“There’s been an increase in usage on the front line,” he said.
Ukraine, which uses Starlink for military communications during its war with Russia, said on Sunday that Russian forces were using Starlink in occupied areas as all-out war with Russia approaches two years.
Asked whether Ukraine was trying to prevent Russia from using the terminals, Yusov said: “Yes, work is underway.”
The Kremlin said on Monday that the terminals were neither certified for use in Russia nor officially supplied to Russia and therefore unusable.
Starlink says it does not do business of any kind with the Russian government or military.
The company said on February 8 that its terminal was not active in Russia and that SpaceX had never sold or marketed the service in Russia or shipped equipment into Russia.
Starlink terminals, which provide high-speed internet connections, were rushed to help Ukraine after Russia’s February 2022 invasion and are critical to Kiev’s battlefield communications.
