The Met Office is urging people to check conditions before traveling, allow extra travel time and prepare for possible power outages in the coldest areas.
Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong said “Arctic air now covers much of the UK and it’s very cold weather Temperatures will continue to be in double digits below zero in some areas throughout the weekend, and daytime temperatures in some areas will struggle to rise above 0 degrees Celsius.
“It looks like this cold snap may continue into next week, with winter hazards likely to continue and more weather warnings likely to be issued. So it’s important that people stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings and plan ahead.”
The UK Health Safety Authority (UKHSA) has also issued a Yellow Cold Health Alert for England until 6 January. These alerts are issued when adverse temperatures may affect people’s health and well-being.
Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said: “As the weather turns colder, it’s vital that we understand our most vulnerable friends, family and neighbours.
“Forecast temperatures could have serious health consequences for some people, leading to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections, particularly for those over 65 and those with pre-existing health conditions.”
The cold weather is expected to continue until Saturday, with amber and yellow alerts remaining in place in Scotland, with the yellow alert covering England’s east coast from Newcastle to Norwich for 24 hours from midnight on Friday. Forecasters warned that widespread accumulations of about one to three centimeters of snow were possible, with five to eight centimeters possible in some places.
There is also a yellow warning for ice and snow in northern Scotland on Sunday.
