British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said on Wednesday that London has imposed sanctions on six officials responsible for the Siberian penal colony where Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny died.
“Those responsible for Navalny’s brutal behavior should have no illusions and we will hold them to account,” Cameron said.
Sanctioned individuals will be subject to a UK asset freeze and travel ban.
They include Vadim Konstantinovich Kalinin, who oversees the IK-3 Arctic penal colony “Polar Wolf”, and his five deputies.
Britain was the first country to impose sanctions over Navalny’s death on Friday and also called for his body to be immediately released to his family.
“It is clear that the Russian authorities view Navalny as a threat and have repeatedly tried to silence him,” Cameron said.
Russian authorities “poisoned him with Novichok in 2020, imprisoned him for peaceful political activity and sent him to an Arctic penal colony. No one should doubt the oppressive nature of the Russian system,” he added.
“That is why we are sanctioning today the most senior prison official responsible for his detention in the penal colony, where he spent his final months.”
