Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will announce 200 million pounds ($252 million) of public investment on Monday to boost Britain’s nuclear deterrent program and its civilian nuclear industry, which the government says will support an expected 40,000 new jobs.
Rishi Sunak’s Downing Street office said in a press release ahead of the announcement that the government would work with industry leaders such as BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, EDF and Babcock to invest in skills, jobs and education by 2030 At least £763 million.
The investment is aimed at ensuring that the northern England town of Barrow-in-Furness – where Rishi Sunak will make the announcement – “flourishes as a base for building UK nuclear submarines”.
“Safeguarding the future of our nuclear deterrent and nuclear energy industry is a vital national endeavour,” Rishi Sunak said ahead of the visit.
“In a more dangerous and competitive world, the UK’s continued maritime nuclear deterrent is more important than ever. Nuclear energy provides consumers with cheaper, cleaner, indigenous energy,” he added.
“That’s why we’re investing in Barrow, the home of British submarines, and the jobs and skills of the future in the booming UK nuclear industry.”
