The price of petrol at the pump remains close to a nine-month high despite wholesale prices falling in recent weeks, the AA said.

The motoring and roadside assistance firm said wholesale petrol prices had fallen by almost 5p a liter over the past three weeks.

It said the wholesale price of diesel has fallen by 7p per liter over the same period.

However, it said official data from the competition regulator’s voluntary reporting scheme for fuel retailers showed that the average price of diesel at the pumps had fallen by just 0.1p per litre.

AA spokesman Luke Bosset said: “I think drivers should feel grateful that pump prices haven’t increased further.

“But if you’re looking for somewhere to lower the inflation rate, look no further than the pump.”

Data logged on Monday, which covers 60% of UK forecourts, showed petrol prices stood at an average of 137.5p per litre.

It said it had remained at this price for the past eight days – its highest level since March.

Government Data has pointed to a 0.7p per liter rise in petrol prices in the past week.

Mr Bosdet said: “The Government’s fuel finder cannot come soon enough.

“Then, perhaps, drivers will see a more timely and competitive rise in fuel prices, and that includes all the small businesses who loaded their vans, trucks and lorries on Monday morning and got no relief.”
