U.S. cracks down on Houthi income with new sanctions, Treasury says

The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on two companies and two vessels that the Treasury Department said facilitated shipments of commodities on behalf of a network of Iran-backed Houthi financial services institutions.

The U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement that the action targeted two shipowners and two vessels in Hong Kong and the Marshall Islands for their role in transporting merchandise on behalf of Said Jamal.

The ministry said proceeds from merchandise sales support the Houthis and their attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Wednesday’s action is the latest U.S. effort to pressure the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group over shipping attacks. Last month, Washington imposed sanctions on the tanker and two companies accused of working with Gamal.
