British Prime Minister Sunak reiterated his commitment to supporting Ukraine on the second anniversary of the Russian invasion, insisting in a statement on Friday that “tyranny can never triumph.”
He said Western countries “must reaffirm” their determination to support Kyiv in its fight against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aggression.
Sunak said in a statement: “Now is the time to show that tyranny will never win and to show once again that we will stand with Ukraine today and tomorrow.”
“We’re prepared to do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, until they win.”
He praised “Ukraine’s courage in the face of terrible suffering” and said the country was defending “the principles of freedom, sovereignty and the rule of law on which we all depend.”
Last month, Sunak pledged a ten-year security cooperation agreement between Britain and Ukraine during a surprise visit to Kiev.
He also announced 2.5 billion pounds ($3.2 billion) in new military aid, bringing overall UK support for the Ukraine war effort to nearly 12 billion pounds.
“When Putin launched his illegal invasion two years ago, the free world responded in unity,” Sunak said in a statement on Friday.
“We stand together for Ukraine. On this grim anniversary, we must reaffirm our resolve.”
Saturday marks the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of its neighbor.
