Two teenage girls were found hanging inside their hostel room at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in Kerala early Thursday, police said.

According to officials quoted by PTI, the deceased have been identified as Sandra (17) from Kozhikode district and Vaishnavi (15) from Thiruvananthapuram district.

Both were staying in the SAI hostel as part of their training programme. Sandra was an athletics trainee and 12th grade student; Vaishnavi played Kabaddi and was studying in 10th class.

What happened

According to a Times of India report, the incident came to light around 5 am when fellow trainees noticed that none of the girls turned up for the morning training session. When there was no response to repeated knocks, the hostel staff went to the room.

“When there was no response, the door was broken,” police said. “Both the girls were found hanging from the ceiling fan inside the room.”

Police said Vaishnavi was officially allotted a separate room but she had spent the night in Sandra’s room. Both were seen by other prisoners that morning.

Officials said there were no immediate signs of a conflict.

police action

Kollam East Police has registered the case and started investigation. The cause of deaths is not yet known. No suicide note has been recovered from the room.

Officials will record statements from other trainees, hostel staff, trainers and relatives of the girls in the next few days. Police said post-mortem will be conducted before the bodies are handed over to their families.

Police said all possible angles including academic pressure, training-related stress and any personal or external factors will be investigated.

about hostel

The hostel houses young athletes who train under national level programs run by the Sports Authority of India. Students usually attend regular school along with a daily training program.

Authorities did not comment on whether the girls had raised any complaints or concerns before the incident. Police said no disciplinary issues have emerged involving any of them.

Over the past few years, researchers and child welfare experts have noted increased mental stress among student athletes – especially those living away from home under competitive training environments.
