Khargone, Nov 6 (IANS) Two people were killed and at least three others were injured in a head-on collision between a mini truck and a pickup vehicle near Balsamud in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone district on Thursday.
The accident occurred around 6.30 am on the busy Khargone-Indore highway in the Kasarwad police station area, which is notorious for heavy traffic and high-speed vehicular movement.
According to police officials, the vehicles got badly entangled due to the intense collision, forcing heavy machinery, including earthmoving machines, to be deployed to separate the debris and rescue the victims.
The deceased have been identified as 42-year-old Dinesh Bhale, resident of Jirabhar village, who was driving a mini truck, and 35-year-old Mal Singh Rawat, resident of Anjad in Barwani district, who was driving a pickup.
Due to the severity of the accident, both drivers were declared dead at the scene. Officials confirmed that their bodies have been sent for post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
The pickup vehicle was loaded with vegetables on the way to the market, while the mini truck had seven passengers. At least three people traveling in the mini truck suffered serious injuries and were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Emergency responders worked quickly to clear the debris and restore traffic flow on the critical route.
Meanwhile, the police have sent the bodies for post-mortem and the injured to the district hospital for treatment. Police are investigating possible factors, including speeding and overtaking errors.
Initial reports suggest that excessive speed may have contributed, although a detailed investigation is underway.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes, where the road was blocked for hours with metal thrown into pieces and produce strewn about.
Community leaders expressed grief and urged the state government to prioritize highway upgrading amid increasing vehicle density. The Khargone-Indore road, a vital link for trade and transportation, has seen several accidents in recent months, raising concerns about road safety infrastructure.
