Two people were killed and eight others injured after their car skidded and fell into a nearly 500 feet deep gorge on National Highway 10 in West Bengal’s Kalimpong district, police said on Saturday.

The accident occurred on Friday evening when the driver of the Siliguri-bound car lost control of the vehicle in a landslide-prone area near Birik Dara and the car fell into a ditch, a senior official said.

He said the car was coming from Gangtok in Sikkim when the accident occurred.

The official said local residents, National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) employees and a police team reached the spot and started the rescue operation. “Two people died and eight injured people were taken to Rambi Hospital. Later, some of the seriously injured were referred to hospitals in Siliguri,” he said.

The officer said that investigation into the accident has been started.
