New Delhi, Nov 2 (IANS) Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva on Sunday said it is surprising to see that after almost two decades of Delhiites having to grapple with severe pollution, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has woken up to raise the issue of pollution in Delhi.
Sachdeva hit out at the previous Congress government led by Sheila Dikshit for ignoring the issue of air pollution for decades.
He said, “Delhiites well remember that the city first turned into the worst gas chamber during the reign of the Congress government around the year 2009, and it was the Congress government of Punjab whose negligence led to large-scale burning of crop residues, adding to the troubles of Delhiites.”
The Delhi BJP president said it is surprising that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra never spoke about Delhi’s pollution situation during her party’s rule or the Aam Aadmi Party’s misgovernance in Delhi in the last two decades.
Sachdeva said, when the BJP government is working round the clock to fight both air and water pollution in the national capital, he has chosen to comment through a social media post.
The Delhi BJP president said it would have been morally and politically appropriate if Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had investigated whether winter pollution was best controlled in 2025 after more than a decade due to efforts made by the new BJP government.
On Sunday, the Congress leader took to social media platform X to express his concern over air pollution in Delhi.
“First Wayanad, then returning to Delhi’s air from Bachhwara in Bihar is truly shocking. The pollution engulfing this city is like a brown shroud thrown over it. It is indeed time we all come together regardless of our political compulsions and do something about it,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said on X.
The Wayanad MP said, “The Central and State governments need to take immediate action. Whatever steps they take to mitigate this appalling situation, we will all support and cooperate with them. Year after year, citizens of Delhi have to face this toxicity without any remedy. Those who suffer from respiratory problems, children who go to school every day and especially senior citizens, need immediate intervention to clear the dirty smog that we are all breathing.”
He tagged his message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav.
