All we know about the earthquake that hit the southern Philippines
- A magnitude-7.4 offshore earthquake struck Manay town in Davao Oriental this morning, killing at least two people in nearby Mati town, according to disaster officials.
- A tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas within 300 km of the epicenter, but the warning was later lifted for both the Philippines and Indonesia.
- Officials reported damage to homes, churches, bridges and roads, some of which became impassable. Officials have warned of strong aftershocks up to 6.4 magnitude.
- President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said search and rescue teams were being mobilized once the situation was safe, adding that the government was “working around the clock” to reach affected communities.
- Videos from Davao City and Manay showed people running from buildings, vehicles swaying and metal doors rattling during the 40-second quake.
- The shock came two weeks after the country’s deadliest earthquake in more than a decade, a 6.9-magnitude quake that hit Cebu that killed at least 74 people.
