All we know about the earthquake that hit the southern Philippines

  • A magnitude-7.4 offshore earthquake struck Manay town in Davao Oriental this morning, killing at least two people in nearby Mati town, according to disaster officials.
  • A tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas within 300 km of the epicenter, but the warning was later lifted for both the Philippines and Indonesia.
  • Officials reported damage to homes, churches, bridges and roads, some of which became impassable. Officials have warned of strong aftershocks up to 6.4 magnitude.
  • President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said search and rescue teams were being mobilized once the situation was safe, adding that the government was “working around the clock” to reach affected communities.
  • Videos from Davao City and Manay showed people running from buildings, vehicles swaying and metal doors rattling during the 40-second quake.
  • The shock came two weeks after the country’s deadliest earthquake in more than a decade, a 6.9-magnitude quake that hit Cebu that killed at least 74 people.

Soldiers deployed to assist after Davao earthquake

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) have deployed disaster response teams to the Davao region after an earthquake struck off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental, the Inquirer of the Philippines reported.

“President Marcos Jr. ordered us to help our countrymen affected by the earthquake in Davao. So immediately, our troops deployed,” AFP chief Gen. Romeo Browder Jr. told reporters at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.
