Chandigarh, Oct 21 (IANS) Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Tuesday that in an intelligence-based operation, Amritsar Rural Police in collaboration with central agencies nabbed two operatives of a terror module and recovered a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) with a launcher from their possession.
The arrested people have been identified as Mahakdeep Singh alias Mahak, resident of Wadali, Amritsar, and Aditya alias Adi, resident of Bhaga Chhina village, Amritsar.
Apart from recovering the RPG, the police teams have also seized the motorcycle on which they were riding.
DGP Yadav said preliminary investigation revealed that the arrested accused were in touch with ISI operatives of Pakistan, who had sent the consignment from across the border via drone for Harpreet Singh, currently lodged in Ferozepur jail.
“The purpose of the RPG was to carry out a targeted terrorist attack,” the DGP said. He said further investigation is underway to establish links in this case to trace the entire network.
Sharing operational details, Senior Superintendent of Police (Amritsar Rural) Maninder Singh said that acting on intelligence regarding the recovery of RPG-22 Netto anti-tank rocket launcher by the accused on the instructions of Harpreet, police teams have arrested both the suspects while they were on their way to deliver the consignment.
The SSP said investigation is underway to identify the people who were to receive the consignment, adding police teams will bring accused Harpreet alias Vicky from Ferozepur jail on production warrant for further questioning.
In this regard, a First Information Report (FIR) number 331 was registered on October 21 under sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act and section 113 of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS) at police station Gharinda, Amritsar Rural.
