Kolkata: Police have arrested two people in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a gold trader from West Midnapore district of West Bengal.
The family of the deceased businessman named Swapan Kamilya had filed a complaint of kidnapping and murder against Rajganj Block Development Officer (BDO) of Jalpaiguri district, Prashant Barman.
Police said on Saturday that the driver of Rajganj BDO and his friend have been arrested. According to police sources, the accused have been identified as Raju Dhali and Tufan Thapa. Raju is a resident of Rajarhat area of Dhali New Town. He is the driver of Rajganj BDO. The second person is said to be a friend of Toofan BDO.
Meanwhile, the police officers investigating the incident have got CCTV footage. Sources said that it has been captured in the footage that the body is being taken in a vehicle with blue lights.
On Saturday, the accused were produced in the Bidhannagar sub-divisional court, where the judge ordered 12 days of police custody for the arrested people.
It is noteworthy that on October 28, the body of Swapan Kamilya was recovered from a ditch in Jatragachi area of New Town near Kolkata. His house is in Dilmatiya village of Mohanpur police station in West Midnapore district. He has a gold shop in Duttabad, Salt Lake area of Kolkata. Last August, some gold jewelery was stolen from the house of Rajganj BDO Prashant Burman.
According to the police, the caretaker of the house claimed that he had sold the stolen gold to Swapan Kamilya. Similarly, Rajganj BDO Prashant Burman went to Swapan Kamilya’s house in West Midnapore district. Swapan was not at home at that time. The BDO had allegedly threatened to kill him. Swapan’s family has submitted one such video to Mohanpur police station.
According to the police, later Rajganj BDO Swapan Kamilya was contacted. At that time the gold trader had promised to return the gold jewellery.
Accordingly, on October 27, Prashant Burman came to Swapan Kamilya’s gold shop in Duttabad. Five other people were also with him. Reportedly, Swapan and his house owner were picked up in a car and driven towards New Town. After going some distance the landlord was dropped off. The landlord could not tell where Swapan was taken.
The next day, Swapan’s bloody body was found in a pit in Jatragachi. According to police sources, there were many injury marks on the body.
On November 5, Swapan’s brother-in-law Debashish Kamilya lodged a written complaint at Bidhannagar South police station and a case was registered against Rajganj BDO Prashant Burman under sections of kidnapping and murder and destruction of evidence. However BDO has denied such allegations.
