Actor-turned-writer Twinkle Khanna spoke about growing up as the daughter of hugely popular movie stars, and how she resented it in her teenage years. Twinkle also spoke about the advantages of being raised by a single mother, and said that she often wonders if she’d have turned out differently had her parents stayed together.
Twinkle is the daughter of the late superstar Rajesh Khanna and veteran actor Dimple Kapadia. They tied the knot in 1973, when Dimple was still a teenager, and half his age. They had an acrimonious separation some years later, and Twinkle said that she was largely raised by her mother. “For the longest time, I didn’t know the patriarchal system existed, because I wasn’t in the system,” she said.

In a chat with fashion designer-actor Masaba Gupta on the Tweak India YouTube channel, Twinkle said, “I don’t remember the word feminism being used ever in the household, but it was there. It was in every action, and there was no one else to do it anyway. And I think a lot of drive and ambition comes from that place. I feel, maybe if my parents were together, would I want to constantly be working? I probably wouldn’t.”
She said that she is often asked what it was like to grow up with famous parents, and her usual response is, “I don’t know any different, so how can I answer that?” She added, “But what I did feel by the time I was a teenager, I resented the fact that I’m in their shadow. And it’s only now that I realise that I was never in their shadow, I was under their shade. It took me so many years (to realise this), especially after I had a child. He doesn’t want us to help him with anything, he wants to do it all on his own. And then you realise, ‘Ok, I was this person once, and I didn’t appreciate it’.
Twinkle is married to actor Akshay Kumar, with whom she has two children, son Aarav and daughter Nitara.
