Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called US President Donald Trump a “welcome reprive” on global tariffs and said that Ottawa would start dialogue with Washington on a new economic deal after the elections.

After the days of turmoil in global markets, the Mercurial US President suddenly announced a stagnation for 90 days on tariffs on most countries except China.

Carney took the social media platform X and called it “welcome to the global economy”.

He said that Canada and the United States will start negotiating on a new economic and security relations soon after the federal election on 28 April “.

Tension on trade and foreign policy has traditionally upset the relationship of close colleagues, who were also the largest trading partners of each other.

Canada was mostly spared in the latest round of Trump’s tariff, but was already targeted by American tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles.

It began imposing 25 percent tariffs on some American auto exports starting on Wednesday, announced in vengeance of Trump’s levy on imported autos and parts last week.

Trump also said on Wednesday that trade deals could be done with every country, which Carney warned in his X post “may result in a fundamental reorganization of the global trade system”.

“In that context, Canada should continue to deepen its relations with business partners, which share our values, including free and open exchange of goods, services and ideas,” he said.

Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister last month, is from the Liberal Party, which is expected to win a large extent.
