Former aides to Donald Trump have joined those criticizing the president following his comments on the deaths of Robert and Michelle Renner.
In a Truth Social post on Monday, Trump suggested that the causes of his death were robert renner’s “Paranoia” and “Passion” With them.
Post There was immediate outrage on social mediaCritics, including former MAGA veteran Marjorie Taylor Greene, condemned the president’s words as “inappropriate” and “outrageous” and called for the “horrible” message to be removed.
“Rob Reiner, a tortured and conflicted, but once Very talented film director and comedy star“He has died with his wife, Michelle, at his side, reportedly driven by rage at others because of his immense, unyielding and incurable pain caused by a brain-crippling disease known as Trump Derangement Syndrome, sometimes known as TDS,” Trump wrote on Monday.
78-year-old man and his 68-year-old wife stabbed to death los angeles Sunday evening home. The couple’s son, Nick Renner, has been taken into custody.
The tone of Trump’s post was quite different, describing the situation as “very sad” before attacking the actor – who is known to be a vocal critic of the current administration.
“They were known to drive people crazy with their fiery obsession with President Donald J. Trump, their apparent paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and ushered in a Golden Age of America, perhaps never before. Rest in peace Rob and Michelle!” The President wrote.
Independent has contacted the White House for comment on the President’s post.
At a news conference in the Oval Office later on Monday, the president reiterated his comments, telling reporters, “I was no fan of his at all. As far as Trump was concerned, he was a deranged person.”
Trump added, “He said … that I was a friend of Russia, controlled by Russia, you know, Russia’s deception, he was one of the people behind it. I think he hurt himself career-wise.”
“He became a deranged person, like Trump Derangement Syndrome. So I was not a fan of Rob Reiner in any way, shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.”
Before his death, Renner had consistently questioned Trump and his ability to serve as president. Diversity Said in 2017 that he was “the single most unfit human being to hold the office of President of the United States.”
“He’s mentally incompetent. Not only does he not understand how government works, he has no interest in even trying to figure out how it works,” Reiner told the outlet following the release of his biopic “LBJ.”
In October, during an interview with MSNBC, Reiner also called on high-profile celebrities to take action against Trump, saying that following the National Guard mobilization in several major cities across the country and Trump’s attacks on free speech, it is “our job now” to push back against the president’s actions.
“This goes beyond the McCarthy era,” Reiner said. “It seems strange compared to what’s going on in America right now. The Hollywood community is very aware of their First Amendment rights being violated. So, we’re well aware of what’s going on.”
“But our job now, as communicators, is to start communicating to the rest of the country, to let them know what’s going to happen to them,” he said.
Renner was a staunch Democrat and very active in politics, hosting fundraisers and campaigning for progressive causes during his long career. He co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which challenged Proposition 8, California’s ban on gay marriage.
He also chaired the campaign for Prop 10, which funded early childhood development services through a tobacco tax. In 2006 he was asked to run for Governor of California against Arnold Schwarzenegger, but later declined due to personal reasons. He endorsed Joe Biden for president in the 2020 presidential election.
Rainer’s involvement in activism stemmed from his family; His father Carl Reiner was a staunch opponent of McCarthyism, while his mother Estelle Reiner opposed the Vietnam War.
High profile names in politics and media also attacked Trump’s comments.
“Rob Reiner and his wife were tragically killed at the hands of their own son, who reportedly had drug addiction and other problems, and their remaining children are in deep grief and mourning. This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies,” Greene, a Georgia Republican, wrote on X.
“Many families lose a family member struggling with drug addiction and mental health problems. This is incredibly difficult and must be faced with compassion, especially when it ends in murder.”
British TV presenter Piers Morgan wrote on Twitter: “That’s a terrible thing to say about a man who has been murdered by his troubled son. Take it down, Mr. President.”
GOP Rep. Thomas Massey wrote: “Regardless of how you feel about Rob Reiner, this is an inappropriate and insulting discussion of a man who was recently brutally murdered.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom said in response to the post, “This is a sick man.”
The View co-host Ana Navarro choked up when she remembered Renner as a “busy” advocate for social justice and defender of democracy.
“This is a tragedy not just for the family, but for everyone who knew and loved him,” he said. “And for the president of the United States to make this about him, and attack Rob Reiner as a way to exercise his American right to speak out about something he disagreed with, it’s shameful, it’s outrageous, and it’s right on top of all the despicable things Donald Trump has done.”
Others pointed to the difference in how Renner responded to the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk earlier this year. CNN anchor Jake Tapper wrote, “The President’s Truth Social post about the Reiners’ horrific deaths is a stark contrast to Rob Reiner’s response to the murder of Charlie Kirk.”
In an interview with Morgan after Kirk’s death, Renner described the incident as “beyond belief”. “This should never happen to anyone, I don’t care what your political beliefs are, this should never happen to anyone,” he said.
The bodies of Rainer and his wife were reportedly discovered by his daughter Romi, who lives nearby. The deaths are being investigated as homicides.
The celebrity couple’s son, Nick Renner, was arrested at 9:15 p.m. Sunday and is being held on $4 million bail, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department records.
The 32-year-old man has been charged with a felony but no other details were immediately available.
