Washington (AP) – President Donald Trump on Tuesday told reporters that he plans to impose more than 10% tariffs on small countries including nations in Africa and Caribbean.
“We will probably set a tariff for all of them,” Trump said, saying that it could be a “slightly more tariff” on goods from at least 100 countries.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik said that the nation will be in Africa and Caribbean with tax levied at these rates, the places which generally hold a relatively modest level of trade with the US and would be relatively insignificant to address the targets of Trump to reduce business imbalances with the rest of the world.
The President was posing letters to about two dozen countries and the European Union in this month, which raised the tariff rate starting from only 1 August.
Those countries typically faced tax rates at the goods close to the rates of April 2 declared by the US President, whose historically high import taxes for the US caused the financial markets nervous and determined the 90 -day conversation period to Tram, which ended on 9 July.
Trump also said that he would announce tariffs on drugs at the end of the month “perhaps”.
The President said that he would start at a low tariff rate and would give companies a year for the manufacture of domestic factories, before they face high import tax rates. Trump said that computer chips would face a similar style of tariffs.
