US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose 200% tariffs on French wine and champagne. He claimed the move would force French President Emmanuel Macron to join his “Peace Commission” initiative, which aims to resolve conflicts around the world.
When asked by reporters about Macron saying he would not join the board, Trump said: “Did he say that? Well, no one wants him because he’s going to be out soon.”
“I’m going to put a 200% tariff on his wine and champagne, and he’s going to join in, but he doesn’t have to join in,” Trump said.
France intend to refuse A source close to Macron said on Monday that invitations to join the initiative had already been made at this stage.
Trump initially proposed a peace commission last September when he announced plans to end the war in Gaza. But an invitation to world leaders last week outlined a broader role in ending conflicts around the world.
