President Donald Trump pushed back against concerns about his health in a wide-ranging new interview in which he discussed his medications, sleep schedule, habits and why he ignored the advice of some doctors.
The 79-year-old president was photographed with bruises on his hands, which he later covered with makeup, and a swollen ankle, raising questions about his health.
White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt said last month that the bruises were from “Frequent handshakes“.
But Trump told Wall Street Journal, In an interview published Thursday, The bruises were caused by taking a higher dose of aspirin than doctors recommended, and he had been doing so for years.
“I’m a little bit superstitious,” he said. “They say aspirin helps thin the blood, and I don’t want thick blood flowing through my heart. I want good, thin blood flowing through my heart. Does that make sense?”
The president also said he would put makeup on his hands after “getting beaten up by someone again,” and that “my makeup goes on very easily, it takes about 10 seconds.”
Trump is the oldest person to hold the office of president, a job that is 24/7 and comes with countless pressures. But the president’s physician, Navy Capt. Sean Bababella, said the president is “in excellent health and well suited to carry out the duties of commander in chief.”
Bababella also said that Trump takes aspirin to “prevent heart disease.” But the president took 325 milligrams a day instead of the common low dose of 81 milligrams.
“They would rather I choose the smaller one,” he said. “I choose the larger one, but I’ve been doing it for years and what it does is cause bruising.”
The president has also been Filmed with eyes closed during cabinet meeting and in the Oval Office. Trump said he doesn’t get much sleep and usually calls and texts his aides at 2 a.m. or later.
“I’ve never been a big sleeper,” he said. He refuted accusations that he dozed off.
“I just close it. It relaxes me,” he said of his eyes. “Sometimes they’ll take a picture of me blinking, blinking, and then they’ll see how I blink.”
Trump is known to have heavy eating habits and enjoys fast food such as burgers and French fries. He also doesn’t do much exercise besides golf. “Walking or running for hours on a treadmill like some people do, that’s not for me,” he said.
In addition to aspirin, Trump’s doctor reported in April that he also takes rosuvastatin and ezetimibe to treat cholesterol and mometasone cream to treat skin conditions.
Trump also issued different statements about the contents of the medical scans he received. In October, he said he underwent an MRI at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
But it turns out he had a CT scan. MRI takes more time and is better at examining soft tissue.
trump told Magazine He regrets getting the advanced test, which put his health under extra scrutiny.
“Looking back, it’s too bad I took it away because it gave them some ammunition,” he said. “If they hadn’t done that, I would have been in a much better situation because of the fact that I was holding it and saying, ‘Oh my gosh, what’s wrong?’ Well, there was nothing.”
Trump’s swollen ankles have also drawn attention this year. The White House later said the bruises on his hands and swollen ankles had a common source: chronic venous insufficiencyin which the veins in the legs are damaged.
Trump said he briefly tried wearing compression stockings but stopped because “I didn’t like them.”
