Washington – US President Donald Trump says his administration “did not have much luck with Canada” to avoid tariffs before next week’s deadline in his business talks.
Trump says his administration is not focused on a deal with Canada and the northern neighbor of the US, “where they just pay tariffs.”
Trump sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, threatening to impose a 35 percent tariff, if Canada does not deal till 1 August.
The White House has said that those duties will apply only to the goods not to the Canada-US-Maxico agreement on trade.
Canada is also being slapped with Trump’s tariff on steel, aluminum and automobiles, and will be in the grip of copper tariff next month.
Canada-American Trade Minister Dominic Labbank said on Thursday that he was encouraged after a meeting with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutynik and Republican Senators in Washington.
