Maria Corina Machado has been awarded Nobel Peace Prize For his work in “promoting peace” in Latin America at a time when “democracy is at risk”.
The 58-year-old industrial engineer was declared the winner in an announcement by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo on Friday.
The Venezuelan opposition leader was honored “for his tireless work to promote democratic rights for the Venezuelan people and his struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said in its citation.
The politician is currently in hiding due to serious threat to his life.
While her family fled the country following threats, Ms. Machado chose to live in exile within Venezuela, the Committee noted in its speech.
“When totalitarians seize power, it is important to recognize the courageous defenders of freedom who rise up and resist,” it continued.
