Kolkata, Nov 13 (IANS) Police have arrested a Trinamool Congress block president from Cooch Behar district, the third arrest in connection with the alleged murder of a gold trader in West Bengal. The crime was allegedly hatched by a Block Development Officer (BDO). Officials gave this information on Thursday.

The accused TMC leader, identified as Sajal Sarkar, is allegedly a close aide of Rajganj BDO Prashant Barman, who is accused of planning the murder. Police are currently investigating his involvement.

The arrest follows the earlier detention of BDO driver, Raju Dhali and his friend Tufan Thapa, taking the total number of arrests in the murder case of gold trader Swapan Kamilya to three.

According to police, Dhali and Thapa have reportedly confessed to the murder during interrogation and have implicated BDO Burman, against whom the family of the deceased gold trader had filed a formal complaint on November 6.

However, the BDO has denied all the allegations regarding the murder.

Police investigation into the murder of a gold trader from West Midnapore revealed that the accused had reached the victim’s shop at Duttabad in Salt Lake area of Kolkata on October 28 in a blue beacon car.

Police said that Kamilya was beaten badly with a belt and a stick inside the shop. He reportedly collapsed and became unconscious after being attacked by the accused.

The accused soon realized that the victim had died from the attack. Later his body was taken away in a car and dumped on the banks of a canal at Jatragachi in New Town. The body was recovered the next day.

Reports suggest that the BDO left the city a day after the murder, and the arrested driver, Raju Dhali, allegedly took him to Dum Dum airport in the same vehicle that was used to dispose of the body.

Police had earlier announced the arrest of Rajganj BDO driver Raju Dhali and his associate Tufan Thapa.

On November 6, the family of the deceased businessman had filed a complaint with the Jalpaiguri district police accusing the Rajganj BDO of kidnapping and murder of Kamilya.
