New Delhi, October 8 (IANS) BJP national spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal and alleged that it has institutionalized political violence and corruption, while the state is struggling with natural disaster.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Poonawala said, “Today TMC in West Bengal means ‘Taliban mind and culture’, not Trinamool Congress. In the last 24 hours, it has achieved another meaning – it has obtained another meaning – Tribal atrocities from T, atrocities on women from M, and a citizen left untouchable from C.”
Poonawala criticized the state government for alleged negligence during recent floods and landslides in North Bengal, killing more than 35 people and displaced more than 50,000 people.
He said, “This tragedy is the result of corruption and greed of the Trinamool government.” He said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was “celebrating like a carnival” while people’s houses were submerged.
He accused the Trinamool activists of conducting violent attacks against three BJP leaders of the tribal community in the last 24 hours.
He said, “Our MP Khagan Murmu was brutally attacked and now he is in ICU due to serious head injuries. Chief whip Shankar Ghosh and MLA Manoj Kumar Uraon were also attacked while helping the flood victims.”
He alleged that under CM Banerjee’s rule, political violence was “institutional, generalized and legalized” and said, “When an MP and MLA are not even safe, imagine the law and order situation.”
Targeting Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Poonawala accused him of “selective outrage”.
He questioned Priyanka Gandhi’s silence on the attack on a tribal leader “while speaking emotionally about Gaza’s Muslims.
He cited the arrest of Telangana Congress leader Naveen Yadav for the alleged voter ID Fraud as evidence of “vote theft” within the Congress.
He said, “This is the real face of the INDI alliance – tribal atrocities, violence and silence on corruption when it is under their own governments.”
