Kolkata, Oct 22 (IANS) The Trinamool Congress on Wednesday criticized the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Center for not releasing funds to West Bengal that was hit by floods and landslides earlier this month.

Using a social media post, Trinamool Congress said that while other states get fund allocation after natural disasters, Bengal is deprived and left to fend for itself.

“The vindictive government has once again abandoned the people of Bengal in their hour of need. While North Bengal is battling devastating floods and landslides that have destroyed lives, homes and livelihoods, the Center is sitting silent and refusing to provide even a single rupee of relief to our state. Home Minister Amit Shah sent Rs 1,950.80 crore to Maharashtra and Karnataka for flood relief. Despite their flood crisis, Bengal is left out of the cold Gone,” the party wrote in a social media post.

Trinamool Congress claimed that such a move stems from the BJP’s defeat in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.

“The Modi-Shah alliance is weaponising federal funds to avenge the humiliation inflicted on Bengal in 2021. While the Center released Rs 13,603.20 crore from SDRF and Rs 2,189.28 crore from NDRF to other states this year, Bengal is conspicuously absent from that list. Political vendetta is being carried out in the name of governance,” it said.

It is noteworthy that West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee had targeted the Center over its step-motherly treatment towards Bengal and criticized the BJP for economically neglecting Bengal despite floods, landslides and other disasters in the state.

Reiterating the same sentiment, the Trinamool Congress further said: “This is deliberate financial strangulation, a cruel, calculated attempt to make common citizens pay the price of their democratic choice. To the anti-Bengali landlords in Delhi: You may try to starve Bengal into submission, but you will only deepen the resolve of those who will not be intimidated. The step-motherly treatment you will show today will also be repaid the same Will be taken accordingly.” Medicine in the ballot box.”
