With head coach and former Liverpool great player xabi alonso And defender Dean Huijsen, Alexander-Arnold presented his personal tribute with a note that read: “My friend Diogo, you are sorely missed but still very much loved. The memories of you and Andre will live on forever. I smile whenever I think of you and will always remember the great times we shared. Miss you every day friend. Love Trent and the family.”
Huijsen and Real Madrid director of football Emilio Butragueño presented the club’s official tribute to Alexander-Arnold.
Alexander-Arnold and Jota were teammates at Anfield for five seasons, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and two League Cups during that time. Alexander-Arnold was criticized by some Liverpool fans after his move to Real Madrid was made public, with the Reds receiving an £8.4m fee from Real Madrid at the end of his contract.
The right back is returning from a spell at Real Madrid after his start to life was disrupted by injury, so he may not be part of Alonso’s starting line-up. But his head coach urged Alexander-Arnold to enjoy his return to his boyhood club.
“We haven’t talked about it exactly, but we’ve talked about the team, the club,” said Alonso, who swapped Liverpool for Real Madrid in 2009.
“Obviously he has a different history to me, he was born and brought up in Liverpool, I remember him from a young age in the academy, coming into the first team and winning the Champions League. So he needs to enjoy that moment because it’s good to be back and it’s going to be good for him.”
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said: “I have very good memories of the player and the human being. He was my vice-captain last season and I have memories of working with him that were only positive. How were the fans… I don’t know what it’s going to be like but they have a warm welcome from my side, that’s for sure.”
