Calgary – Westjet says some personal data that includes information about travel documents such as passports was stolen in cyber attack earlier this year, but credits and debit card numbers as well as user passwords were not compromised.
In a note for customers, Westjet says that the personal information taken vary from person to person, but it may include name, date of birth, e -and -mailing address, mailing address, phone number, gender and recently travel booking history, including travel booking numbers.
It states that stolen data may also include information about travel documents used by passengers while traveling with Westjet, such as passport or other government issued identity documents, and other information.
Westjet warned that stolen information could be used for identity theft or fraud and says it is offering the identity of affected customers and offering free monitoring for 24 months.
The airline says it identified suspicious activity on its system on 13 June and found that criminals had temporarily accessed some of their systems.
The Office of Canada’s Security Commissioner has opened an investigation into the incident.
