tottenham Hotspur’s official LGBTQI+ supporters group, the Proud Lilywhites, have expressed their disappointment after the club’s rainbow flag display was moved to Tuesday. Champions League Struggle against Slavia Prague.

The flag, a symbol of support for the LGBTQI+ community, is usually flown prominently in the north-east corner of the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, near the away fans’ section.

However, it was moved to the south-west corner following a request to UEFA by Czech side, Slavia Prague.

The Proud Lilywhites released a statement explaining the situation: “Slavia Prague is concerned that some of their supporters may damage the flag and cause disorder if it remains in its normal location.

“Once an away club raises a potential safety issue, UEFA and the home club need to assess the risk and act accordingly. The result tonight is that the flag will be moved.”

The group highlighted the underlying issue, saying: “Let’s be honest about what it means. The risk here is not the flag. This is the reaction of a small number of opposition supporters. It is disappointing, and it is another reminder of the hostility LGBTQI+ fans still face in European football.”

Despite their disappointment, the Proud Lilywhites praised the club’s response.

“We also want to make clear that the club has handled this appropriately. They have been transparent with us throughout, pushed back where they could and ensured that this sits firmly as a request of the visiting club rather than a decision rooted in Spurs’ own values.”

The statement ended with a defiant message: “Tonight, the flag will still be flown. It will still be seen. And our message will remain the same. This is our home. Our community is right here. No visiting team can change that.”

“Let’s get behind the team tonight and show the opposition that we play with pride in our stadium. COYS.”

This is another example where the rainbow flag has been moved for the sake of European sustainability.

Tottenham reportedly made efforts to retain their original position but reluctantly agreed to the transfer on security grounds, as understood by the Press Association.

A Tottenham spokesperson confirmed: “The flag has been moved at the request of the visiting team due to UEFA security reasons.”
