tommy fleetwood Delhi Golf Club had the good fortune of hitting a tree with a birdie at the start of the final day of the DP World India Championship to fall two points short of the lead.

ryder cup The winner had his first bogey of 37 holes, three-putting the short 17th from 35 feet as he reached the par-five final.

His ball seemed in danger of getting lost in the dense vegetation, only to graze a branch in the depth of the trees and rebound close to the front boundary from where he almost holed a chip for eagle.

With a total of 69 and 15-under he fell well short of Japan’s Keita Nakajima, who shot an excellent bogey-free seven-under 65 but was disappointed with his form at Fleetwood Greens.

“It was a shame because my speed was pretty bad all day, but I thought I played pretty well,” said the Southport golfer, who achieved PGA Tour success at the Tour Championship in August as he searches for his first win on the DP World Tour since January 2024.

“I’m not going to be negative about it, I know I have to work on it a little bit but I’ve done a lot of good so far.

“The two back are close enough where I still have a little bit of control over it.”

Fleetwood’s Ryder Cup teammates shane lowry Turned in at three under but played the back nine at level par, with a birdie at the last for his second consecutive 69 to leave him at 14 under and three behind in third.

“I got very frustrated on the back nine today. I started hitting too loose shots, made some silly mistakes,” the Irishman said.

Alex Fitzpatrick, another Englishman, had four birdies in his opening nine holes to sit at 13 under with a five-under 67.

masters champion Rory McIlroyWith his best round of the week – 68 to move to 10 under – he limited himself to just one bogey but found himself seven bogeys behind, even further than when he started.

The world number two admits that chasing the leaders is impossible.

“If I hit fewer shots tomorrow I can make up the score and see what happens, but I’d say I’m probably two shots too far behind to have a real chance,” he said.

The Northern Irishman spent Friday night at an event with national cricket hero Sachin Tendulkar on stage in his Masters green jacket.

“It was really enjoyable for me to be on stage with a living legend like Sachin and hear him talk a bit about his career and it’s always nice to have an excuse to wear the green jacket from time to time,” he said.
