Connecticut-based First & Last Bakery, LLC is recalling three of its tomato sauce products, according to a Monday press release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
remembrance The sauce was released after it was “manufactured without an approved schedule or otherwise evaluated to determine whether the process is adequate,” which could have resulted in the buildup of Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium responsible for botulism, a “potentially fatal form of food poisoning.”
The three products being recalled are: First and Last Original Marinara Sauce, Tomato and Basil, First and Last Original Traditional Pasta Sauce, Meat Flavored, and First and Last Original Puttanesca Sauce, Mild Hot and Spicy.
The sauces, packaged in 26 FL OZ jars, were distributed to Big Y and Stop & Shop retail stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts beginning September 22, 2025. They are marked with use-by dates of September 2026.
According to the FDA, the sale and production of these sauces has been suspended “to ensure full compliance with all regulatory requirements.”
Although no illnesses attributed to the sauce have been reported to date, customers are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Products that are not “properly processed, acidified, or low-acid canned foods” may contain Clostridium botulinum, which causes botulism.
Botulism can result in symptoms such as weakness, dizziness, double vision, and trouble speaking or swallowing.
The FDA notes, “Difficulty breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal discomfort, and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical help.”
The recall of the sauce comes after Nate’s Fine Foods of Roseville, California recalled 245,000 pounds of linguine, fettuccine, penne and other pasta sold to large producers. Eat hot meals and pasta saladsIncluding Walmart and Target.
Tests showed the pasta contained the same strain of Listeria that was found in the outbreak, which has killed four people and sickened 20 since August 2024.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed earlier this month that a listeria outbreak linked to pre-cooked pasta meals has killed two more people and caused seven additional illnesses, bringing the total to deaths. The death toll in 18 US states has reached six and the number of sick people has reached 27.,
The latest deaths were recorded in Hawaii and Oregon, joining previous deaths in Illinois, Michigan, Texas and Utah.
