Tom Aspinall Has been diagnosed with a rare condition in both eyes and is yet to return to action as he provided a worrying update on he got hurt in his Heavyweight title defense against Cyril Gane at UFC 321,

Aspinall has not been allowed to fight, let alone train, and has admitted he may need surgery, which could prevent him from fighting in 2026.

“We’ll have to see how it goes over the next few weeks. Obviously it depends on the experts and other things, but I’m not in the gym training at the moment,” he said on his YouTube channel.

“I’m not doing anything MMA-wise right now. I’m just following doctor’s orders and seeing what happens with my health.”

Aspinall is undergoing specialist treatment and has seen improvement since the injury a month ago, but the report added that “targeted periocular (around the eyeball) steroid injections or surgical intervention may be required to address persistent mobility impairment if symptoms do not resolve”.

Gane escaped disqualification for a strike to the eye in the main event of UFC 321, as referee Jason Herzog ruled it to be accidental rather than intentional.

The Atherton fighter says he has had no contact with Gane since the fight and is keen to get back in the cage with the 35-year-old once he has recovered.

Aspinall said, “I’m obviously very keen to come back and beat this guy. But I have to be 100% perfect.” “So whenever the eye is fit enough to go, that’s when I’ll do it.”
