President Draupadi Murmu will swear in Sanjeev Khanna as the 51st Chief Justice of India today (Monday). The swearing-in ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the Presidential Palace. Justice Khanna will succeed Justice DY Chandrachud and assume the duties of Chief Justice.
Justice Khanna has been involved in many historic decisions of the country. Justice Khanna was involved in important decisions such as the abolition of the electoral bonds scheme and the abrogation of Article 370. Additionally, he will continue in this position until May 13, 2025.
What important decisions was he involved in?
Justice Khanna has been serving as a Supreme Court judge since 2019. Apart from electoral bonds, he was also involved in decisions such as abrogating Article 370, upholding the sanctity of EVM and granting interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal. Justice Khanna was born in a Delhi family on May 14, 1960. His father, Justice Dev Raj Khanna, is a judge of the Delhi High Court. He is also the nephew of former Supreme Court Chief Justice HR Khanna. He studied law at Delhi University Campus Law Centre. He also served as Acting Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
Justice Khanna was admitted to the Delhi Bar in 1983 and initially practiced in the District Court, Tisahjari campus and later in the Delhi High Court. He also served as senior standing counsel to the Income Tax Department for a long time. In 2004, he was appointed as the Standing Advocate (Civil), Delhi. Justice Khanna has handled many criminal cases in the Delhi High Court as Additional Public Prosecutor.
Appointment announced on October 24
Former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna for the CJI post on October 16. Thereafter, the Center officially announced the appointment of Justice Khanna as the Chief Justice on October 24. Friday is Justice Chandrachud’s last working day as CJI. He was then given a grand farewell party by Supreme Court judges, lawyers and staff, ending his successful two-year term.
