Chennai, Nov 12 (IANS) The main suspect involved in the murder of two temple guards in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district was shot and arrested after he tried to attack police during a chase on Wednesday morning.

The man is believed to have killed two night guards at a temple near Rajapalayam in the district. The gruesome double murder shocked residents. The incident took place at the Arulmigu Nachdai Vairavar Swamy Temple, which is owned by Sethur Sam and managed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department.

Located in a temple complex near Rajapalayam, the temple was guarded at night by 50-year-old Pechimuthu and 65-year-old Shankarapandian. At around 6.45 am, morning shift guard Madasamy saw the two men lying dead inside the temple premises with serious injuries on their neck, arms and legs.

CCTV cameras were found broken and the DVR unit was missing, indicating a clear attempt to destroy evidence. The donation box was broken and scattered cash was found nearby.

Forensic experts rushed to the scene to collect samples, while sniffer dogs were deployed to trace the attackers. Police suspect that the attackers had entered the temple with the intention of stealing cash and valuables, but were confronted by the guards, leading to the brutal murders.

After an intensive search, the police traced the prime suspect, Nagaraj, who is believed to be involved in the double murder.

When officers attempted to arrest him, he allegedly attacked them and tried to escape. The police opened fire in self-defence, causing leg injuries before taking him into custody. He was immediately taken to the government hospital under police protection for treatment.

A case has been registered under several sections including murder and attempt to robbery. Virudhunagar district police have increased patrolling and announced tight security at night at all temples in the area.

The shocking crime has deeply shocked the devotees and residents, with local leaders urging the HR&CE department to install advanced monitoring systems to prevent similar incidents in future.
