Chennai, Nov 20 (IANS) The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), Chennai, has predicted heavy rainfall in 10 districts of Tamil Nadu on November 21 as the weather conditions over the southern Bay of Bengal continue to change.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the RMC said the low pressure area which was lying over Comorin Sea and adjoining areas has now moved in a west-northwest direction towards areas near Lakshadweep and Maldives.
The system is likely to move in a similar manner in the next few hours.
The weather office also said that a fresh low pressure area is expected to form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal on Thursday night or Friday.
Once formed, it is likely to move west-northwestwards, leading to increased rainfall activity over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
RMC said light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely at many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal today and tomorrow.
However, 10 districts likely to receive heavy rainfall on November 21 have been specifically identified. These districts are Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari.
Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over these areas due to the influence of the existing low pressure circulation and possible new weather system over the Bay of Bengal.
Fishermen have been advised to remain alert as wind speed may increase in parts of Comorin Sea, Gulf of Mannar and south-west Bay of Bengal.
The RMC warned about rough sea conditions and urged coastal residents to closely follow official updates.
With many districts already experiencing intermittent rain over the past few days, local administrations in sensitive areas have been asked to be prepared for possible waterlogging, flash floods and disruption in transport. People living in low-lying areas have been advised to take necessary precautions.
As the Northeast Monsoon remains active over Tamil Nadu, the back-to-back formation of low pressure systems is expected to keep the rainfall activity across the state stable in the coming days.
The weather office will issue further updates as the new system develops over the Bay of Bengal.
